Over the past nine months, volunteers from across the catchment have contributed to shaping the strategy through three workshops, a field day, and numerous meetings and conversations. This collaborative process has resulted in a document developed by the community, reflecting shared priorities for pest management in the Te Hakapupu Pleasant River catchment.

At the final gathering, attendees reviewed the journey, the outcomes, and the next steps, while sharing lunch — including some mystery game meat — and discussing how the strategy will guide future pest management efforts.

East Otago Catchment Group Co-ordinator Steph Scott said the strategy’s strength lies in its community ownership.

“This has been a volunteer‑driven process from the start. People have given their time, knowledge, and energy to create something meaningful for the catchment. The strategy will continue to evolve, and we’ll move forward at a pace that feels appropriate and sustainable for everyone involved.”

Although this phase of work has concluded, the strategy is a living document. It will be updated as new information, challenges, and opportunities emerge, ensuring it remains responsive to the needs of the catchment and its people.

The East Otago Catchment Group acknowledges the contributions of local Rūnaka members, landowners and community partners who helped shape the strategy and looks forward to continuing this collaborative approach in the months and years ahead.

With a shared strategy now in place, the next step is turning plans into action by working together to coordinate pest management efforts and deliver lasting benefits for the catchment.
